2023 British Music Trends
After a year of Covid-19 restrictions, music festivals are back in business. Amongst the many returning acts is London rapper Loyle Carner who was just shortlist for the Mercury Prize.
She has a unique vocal style and is known for her theatrical live performances. Gracie Abrams is another rising star who started her career on SoundCloud. She is set to make a big impact in 2023 with her single, ‘nonsense’.
Lianne La Havas
Lianne La Havas is an English singer and songwriter who began her musical journey as a member of the band Paris Parade. She later joined the group Hejira, crafting intricate alt-soul with incorporated folk flourishes and lyrics that explore life on both the physical and spiritual plane.
After releasing her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough?, she released Blood in 2015 and has since collaborated with artists like Willy Mason. Her latest release Forget Music showcases her ability to move effortlessly between genres, combining influences from soul, jazz, funk, and folk into one mesmerizing album.
Her music captures passion, impulsiveness, and ambivalence, while remaining lucid and composed. She manages to captivate audiences with her powerful vocals and thoughtful songwriting.
Sabrina Carpenter
Olivia Rodrigo had everyone gossiping about who she was talking about in her song Drivers License and the blondes that she refer to were assumed to be Sabrina Carpenter, Joshua Bassett or both. When she dropped her follow up album SOUR it only stirred up more drama because fans were convinced that the new songs were about them. Olivia’s been all over the place since including Glastonbury and performing at the MTV VMA’s. She’s also going on a US, UK and European tour this year for her latest EP email I can’t send. See you there Olivia!

Gracie Abrams
Gracie Abrams is one of those rare popstars who has earned a legion of devoted fans through her own brand of honesty and vulnerability. With her debut album, ‘Good Riddance’, already on sale and her first headlining tour upcoming, the 23-year-old is certainly on a roll. But even in the midst of her busy schedule, she takes a moment to chat with HUNGER about her love of touring, the intricacies of her album and embracing her deepest darkest feelings. It’s been a whirlwind 2023 for the LA-based singer. And she’s not stopping anytime soon.
HUNGER is a free online magazine celebrating the best in music and culture.
Lizzy McAlpine
The British Phonographic Industry’s annual popular music awards are the UK’s answer to the Grammys. They recognize chart-topping artists for competitive award categories and feature exclusive performances.
She’s a breath of fresh air, and a welcome departure from the saccharine pop of the past. Her sultry, languid hit “Fly Girl” has spun out into the perfect song for girls’ night getting-ready sessions.
She’s currently on tour promoting Dear Edward, an Apple TV+ drama she wrote and performed on. Expect more from this versatile, emotionally evocative folk singer.
Cain
Known for his work with Journey, Cain wrote the band’s biggest hit “Faithfully.” He has also released eight solo albums and contributed to several other Journey records.
GAY TIMES called Cain’s latest album, Preacher’s Daughter, a stunningly transfixing piece of gothic Americana. The singer recently lent her talents to a live version of Florence + the Machine’s “Morning Elvis.”
Newcomer Stella Rose is another queer rocker to watch in 2023. Her first single, Muddled Man, is a fervent mix of sensuality and horror that is already gripping fans. The sultry pop star plays London’s Grace London in September. She’ll be joined by the band Dead Language.
Inhaler
The cathartic, anthemic atmosphere created by Foals as they take to the stage is something that will remembered for a long time. It’s no wonder they are winning awards, filling arenas and headlining festivals.
They are the only British band to be awarded an album of the year at the Wroclaw sound festival and their latest LP ‘Holy Fire’ is a testament to their talent.
ELIO are heading to London’s Camden Assembly on their UK tour this autumn. Babymorocco play at Bermondsey Social Club in November and Fred Roberts is headed to The Social in December. MGMT have shows in London and Leeds on their tour schedule for October and November.
